YWCA Starts "Girls Who Code" Club
Beth Royer-DeLong, YWCA Program Director, will instruct a 10 class session, "Girls Who Code" beginning on Monday, March 5, from 4-5 p.m. for girls in grades 6 -12. Participants must bring their own laptop with Wifi capability for the class.
"Girls Who Code" is a nonprofit organization which aims to support and increase the number of women in computer science. The club will help girls work together to design and code projects and activities such as game design, websites, storytelling and other things of interest to class participants.
The number of women going into the computer science area has dropped tremendously in the last few years according to Royer-DeLong. "I'd like these girls to see that they can be successful in this field by seeing women in the programs now and giving the girls some experiences that will let them see they can do it too," she said. Royer-DeLong is mostly self-taught which makes the Girls Who Code curriculum perfect for those who may not have a strong Computer Science background.
