United Way at 70 percent of goal -

Thanks to the community's generosity, the United Way of Miami County is 70 percent to its goal of reaching $1,350,000. This money will help support 43 local agencies in Miami County.

Woman gets probation for child endangerment -

A Piqua woman received probation this week in Miami County Municipal Court in connection with an incident that involved both of an infant's arms getting broken in October. Brianna N. Graham, 21, was sentenced to two years of probation, 180 days of suspended jail time, and a $25 fine plus court costs for first-degree misdemeanor child endangering, amended down from third-degree felony child endangering, in municipal court.

Commissioners discuss bonds for hospital project -

On Thursday, the Miami County Commissioners held a public hearing to discuss the issuance of $250 million in bonds for the Kettering Health Network's Troy hospital project. Approval of the resolution would authorize the issue and sale of hospital facilities improvement and refunding revenue bonds in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $250 million.

Private industry partnering with schools -

Ferguson Construction Company and The Midwest Regional Education Service Center have partnered together to provide a skilled trades curriculum to seventh grade students for the 2018-19 school year. This curriculum provides the resources for teachers and counselors to inform students about the careers that are available after their high school graduation in skilled trades.

FRAUD: A complainant reported that an unknown subject opened several bank accounts in his name on Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. The investigation is pending. A complainant advised he was given counterfeit money for a gun he sold on Dec. 10. The investigation is pending.

Commissioners discuss sewer rates -

At their work session Wednesday morning, the Miami County Commissioners discussed proposed changes to the county's sewer rates with the Sanitary Engineering Department. According to Huelskamp, the Piqua system has lost nearly $80,000 in the last five years.

Bradford board spotlights students -

The Bradford Board of Education recognized a handful of students during their meeting on Monday evening, even prompting a visit from Mayor Don Stump to congratulate two high school students. Media teacher Sharon Moore recognized Bradford high school students Emma Canan and Maggie Manuel, who were two of 21 students recognized for their winning essays and posters during the 18th annual Families Matter poster and essay contest, "Traditions Build Strong Families," presented by Family Services of Montgomery County.

Two cows shot with arrows in Union Twp. - 12:36 pm updated:

Miami County sheriff's deputies were dispatched on Dec. 8 to a property in the 5000 block of Albaugh Road in Union Township, where they found one cow lying down in a field and another standing in its stall in the barn. The first cow died shortly after the deputies arrived.

Piqua man pleads guilty for bringing a gun to campus -

The Piqua man who allegedly brought a loaded gun to the Edison State Community College in April changed his plea to various charges in Miami County Common Pleas Court on Monday. Evan M. Grissom, 25, of Piqua, entered a plea of guilty to fifth-degree felony possession of a weapon on school property.

Piqua police continue to investigate reported shooting behind Walmart - 3:13 pm updated:

Miami Valley Today Law enforcement units from Piqua and surrounding agencies respond to the Piqua Walmart on Monday afternoon on the report of shots fired. In addition to the Piqua Police Department, units from the Miami County Sheriff's Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Troy Police Department responded to the incident.
