Man arraigned for assault at jail -

A Troy man was in court on Tuesday to face charges that he assaulted corrections officers in the Miami County Jail. Marion A. Cotterman, 45, of Troy, was arraigned on two counts of fifth-degree felony assault in Miami County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.

Miami County Bar Association names schoalrship winners -

The first $1,500 scholarship recipient is Addisyn A. Richardson, a senior at Tippecanoe High School who lives with her parents Glenn and Mindy Richardson of Tipp City. Addi is a well-rounded student who has pursued a rigorous college prep curriculum and carried a 3.14 GPA at Tipp while lettering in golf and softball, participating in the Foreign Language and Octagon clubs, volunteering for her church, the soup kitchen and Habitat for Humanity, and being employed part-time at Culver's.

Two weeks ago, my column featured a piece on Bike Piqua and the great work being done in northern Miami County to promote cycling in the area. John Terwilliger, a long-time friend of mine, recently asked if I would be interested in doing a column on the efforts Troy is expending to do the same.

TFBT celebrates Troy students -

The Future Begins Today recognized dozens of its TFBT Club students on Thursday evening at its final family event of the school year. Nearly 160 guests attended the family event: Health YOU and end-of-year awards including enrolled TFBT Club students in grades four through six, their parents and families, their TFBT advisers, Troy City Schools educators, TFBT board of trustees and staff.

Kroger robbed late Thursday night -

A robbery was reported late Thursday evening at Kroger after an masked male subject stolen an undetermined amount of cash. The robbery was reported at approximately 11:54 p.m. on Thursday night at the Piqua Kroger, located at 1510 Covington Ave. According to Deputy Chief Jason Preston of the Piqua Police Department, a white male subject demanded money from a cashier and was able to leave the store with an undetermined amount of cash.

County to house federal inmates -

The Miami County Commissioners signed an agreement between the Miami County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice and the Prisoner Operations Division of the U.S. Marshals Service at their meeting Thursday. The facility will house up to 20 federal inmates, 15 male and five female, at a daily rate of $59 per inmate.

Darke County Jail closed, evacuated after drug spill

The spill happened on Tuesday, April 17 when deputies were booking a man into the jail on a parole violation. The man had baggies of an unknown white powder.

Skin cancer screenings to be offered -

As part of Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month , Dayton-area dermatologists are offering free skin cancer screenings to raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancers during the week of May 7-11. A screening will be offered in Miami County on Thursday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. at the UVMC Cancer Care Dugan Infusion Center, 3130 N. County Road 25-A, Troy.

Drug ring member arraigned -

Hugo Avendano, 32, was extradited from a Pasco County Jail in Florida and incarcerated at the Miami County Jail on Thursday. On July 15, Avendano, formerly of Tipp City, was apprehended by the Pasco County Sheriff's Office in Florida on Miami County warrants.

Inmate can have second evaluation, if he pays -

The man accused of throwing a cup of blood in the face of a correction's officer can have a second forensic psychiatric evaluation performed - if he pays for it. On Tuesday, Miami County Common Pleas Court Judge Christopher Gee presided over a hearing on a motion regarding evaluation of Sharp's mental condition and competency hearing.

M-U considering SRO options -

According to Superintendent Brad Ritchey, the district is reviewing a proposal from the West Milton Police Department for the provision of a school resource officer. Administrators recently met with Municipal Manager Matt Kline and Police Chief Harry Busse to discuss the costs and expectations of the village police department providing that service.

Roundabout discussion returning to commission -

The Piqua City Commission will be considering over a dozen items of legislation during their meeting on Tuesday evening, including contracts for the Garbry Road/Looney Road roundabout project, a new emergency ordinance in regard to telecommunications support structures, and more. The Ohio Department of Transportation is ready to bid the Garbry Road/Looney Road roundabout project, so the commission will be voting on final legislation with ODOT so that ODOT can proceed with the bidding subsequent to construction of the project.

Student drummers to play Taste of the Arts -

A Japanese drumming cadre made up of 24 junior high and high school students from Mississinawa Valley will perform in downtown Piqua at this year's Taste of the Arts on May 11. Combining choreography and drumming with cultural costuming , the Kuroi Taka Taiko drumming group has achieved great success throughout Ohio and Indiana, performing at the Ohio State House, Langfest at Ohio State University, the second Summit of Educators, the Ohio School Board Association Convention, International Baccalaureate schools in Indianapolis, and many local and school events. This unique drumming program was introduced at Mississinawa Valley in 2007, and currently has 63 students in four performance groups, ranging from fifth grade through high school.

Troy man sentenced for child endangering -

A Troy man received jail time this week for a child endangering charge in connection with children being present during an apparent drug overdose death in May of last year. Danille Saunders, 32, of Troy, was found deceased in a residence on the 2700 block of Huntington Drive in Troy on May 18, 2017.
